Goodness, it's a bit of a tale. The short version is that some people decided he was nuts and publicly tortured him as a heretic for several days, until Benedick felt sorry for him and stepped in to made a deal to save his life. Didn't know alive meant just barely, in some undisclosed prison where he'd continue to be abused, but hey, at least he tried (eventually).
